Another half term is fast approaching and as always in Devon there is so much going on, so if you’re looking for ideas of things to do with the family, that won’t break the bank, here’s a round-up of 11 free events taking place over the May Half term week. Exmouth Festival – Fri 26th May – Sat 3rd June.
With more than 50 music acts on offer, Exmouth Festival keeps getting bigger and better every year. As well as all the music acts, there is plenty more to enjoy, including, children’s activities, a fairground, theatre, arts and crafts, food stalls, bars, and workshops.
Life on the ocean floor, RAMM Exeter – Sat 27th May
Time: 10.30am – 12 Noon.
Part of the RAMM’s summer exhibition, Sea Life: Glimpses of the wonderful.
This is a free event for under 5s and their families. Little explorers can go on a voyage of discovery under the sea, exploring a world of pattern, texture, colour, movement and sound. Organised with The Carousel Project. www.thecarouselproject.org.uk.
Dawlish Arts Festival – Sat 27th May – Sat 3rd June.
A week full of family fun including a street market and fun day on Sat 27th with the crowning of the carnival queen and entertainment from the bandstand.
A family fun & fiction day on Thurs 1st, with a Teddy Bear picnic with Paddington Bear, a where’s Wally hunt and a build a Gruffalo workshop.

Brixfest – Sat 27th – Wed 31st May.
Multi award-winning annual family festival in Brixham, celebrating the beautiful town and it’s heritage.
There’s an amazing fireworks display on Sat 27th, Dragon Boat Race on Sun 28th, Classic Car rally on Wed 31st, Cooking Demonstrations, crabbing competitions, sailing regatta, Children’s activities and much, much more.
One of BrixFest’s most popular events is Children’s day, taking place on Breakwater beach on Mon 29th 11am – 4pm. Children can enjoy a wide range of activities including, a petting zoo, theatre workshops and performances, build-a-boat, arts & craft activities, face-painting, and lots more.

GEOPARK FESTIVAL, Make your own cave – (Brixham Heritage Museum) – Sat 27th May – Sat 3rd June.
Drop in anytime during normal Museum opening times to create your very own prehistoric cave model to take home with you.
GEOPARK FESTIVAL – Paignton Geoplay Parks 5th Birthday Party – Sat 27th May.
Time: 2pm – 6pm.
Join in celebrating the first 5 years of the amazing Geoplay Park on Paignton Green.
Free activities all afternoon including finding fossils and listening to a story or two from the play rangers.
Dinosaur Fossil Hunt – Sun 28th May.
(Unfortunately this event has now been cancelled but they are hoping to reorganise it for the summer holidays)
Part of Torquay Dinosaur Worlds 7th birthday celebrations.
Taking place on Paignton beach. Little explorers can have fun digging in the sand to find amazing dinosaur fossils including teeth, claws, skulls and bones. They also get to take some of their finds home with them.
Play in a day at Guildhall, Barnstaple – Thurs 1st June.
FREE workshop for 7-12 year olds.
A chance to be involved in creating a play inspired by the Ancient Greek Myths & Legends. Places are limited and booking is essential.
Summer fair, Ivybridge Donkey Sanctuary – Sat 3rd June.
Time 10am – 3pm.
Join in the fun at the Donkey Sanctuary’s main fundraiser of the year and support the donkey interaction sessions they provide to children with additional needs.
Throughout the day there will be donkey activities in the main arena, as well as demonstrations and information on a wide variety of donkey care topics.
There will also be a dog show, fun fair, stalls & traders, games to play and prizes to be won and refreshments available including homemade cakes and ice creams and a BBQ.
Torbay Air Show – Sat 3rd – Sun 4th June.
Taking place on Paignton Green, visitors will be able to watch breathtaking air displays over the bay from the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft, the Tigers Freefall Parachute Display Team, the Raven Aerobatic team, the Piston Provost and the historic PBY5A Catalina, just to name a few. There’s also lots of other free family activities such as, fair ground rides, exhibition stands, kids areas, food stalls, bars, experiential activities and much more.
Axe Valley wildlife day at Seaton wetlands – Sun 4th June.
Time 10am – 4pm.
Wildlife exploration fun for the whole family including, pond dipping, guided walks, activity trail, campfire cooking and competitions.
